NYC FOODIE OPENING OF THE WEEK: MISSION CHINESE

January 9, 2015 Josh Beckerman

The new Mission Chinese on East Broadway is Awesome. Period. Danny Bowien has moved his Orchard street restaurant a few blocks away into the old Rosette space,- a bigger, better space, to dine on Bowien's unique take on Chinese cuisine. I went two days in a row at the end of '14 and loved every minute of it. Mission Chinese is fun, festive, spicy, unique, and darn good. It's the hottest restaurant of 2015, the lines are forming, get there early, grab a drink, and have a grand ole spicy time!

The menu at this new Mission Chinese 2.0 is more extensive then last, which includes three family style dishes. I tried two of the three. Josefina's House Special Chicken ($60) is really Filipino, inspired by a recipe from executive chef Angela Dimayuga's grandmother. It's stuffed with sausage and egg, and then some. And it's #fuckingawesome. I loved it. It was like eating a story. Order it. Or, if duck tickles your fancy, check out the Beggar's Duck, roasted in lotus leaf, baked in clay, and cracked at the table. When chef Bowien comes to your table and has you take a mallet and crack that clay, a stunning bird will appear. A gravy with caviar was poured on to ours, and it was one of the most fun dishes I've consumed. #genius.

The noodle dishes at Mission Chinese are quite unique and delectable. Chewy Green Tea Noodles come with ginger scallion, hoisin and matcha. Steamed oat noodles come with charred eggplant and granola. #yesplease

You will love all the dishes under the "Chef Specialties" section of the menu. Get your tastebuds tingling, and your brow sweating with the heat from Mission's Mapo Tofu with Heritage pork, aged beef fat, and doubanjiang. It's hottt. Wood oven fish comes with fresh turmeric, charred chili pickles, and sichuan pepper oil. It's a medley of flavors and awesomeness. And of course, their Beef and Broccoli, which is beef brisket served with a smoked oyster sauce and flax seeds is my favorite in the city.

The pretties side of Napa Cabbage I ever did see is steamed in chamomile and masala milk, and served with flowers. #beautiful

My two experiences at Mission Chinese have been truly memorable. It's hip and cool, with Chinese like you've never had before. Take the heat, open up your culinary horizons, and have a magical night. See you there soon.
