A new Thai joint has opened up in NoLita and it's mad cool. Uncle Boons, from chefs Matt Danzer and Ann Redding, is a Thai Rotisserie and grill with a focus on Thai style drinking food -Ahaan Kap Klaem. The space is awesome, inspired by a typical Thai house in the 60's and 70's. The idea here is to have drinks and share some flavorful Thai bites with your friends, your date, or solo like I did last week. And tasty bites are bound to be had.
Carmelized beef cheeks ($12) come with a Garlic-Peppercorn Whiskey Sauce and have a unique flavor. The cheeks are tender as can be, and you'll want a side of roti to sop up that interesting whiskey sauce. I'm not sure I loved the dish as much as my server, but it was definitely interesting and perfectly executed.
Uncle Boons' version of that Thai classic Khao Soi ($20) is quite delicious. Northern Style Golden Curry with Egg Noodles, Chicken Leg, Pickled Mustard Greens and Coconut Milk. There is a great balance between spicy and sweet in this dish. Great flavor too.
For dessert I had something from their "Charcoal Grilled Goodies", Grilled Blowfish Tails ($14). Never in my life have I had blowfish tails, so i HAD to have them. They were juicy and tasty, served with a nice and tangy lime, garlic, and chili sauce.
So get your Thai bites on in Nolita at Uncle Boons. A fun time is to be had, paired with some tasty bites.
