Gaia Italian Cafe

January 8, 2013 Josh Beckerman

Another day, another gem. Gaia Italian Cafe is a true hidden treasure on Houston Street, between Norfolk and Suffolk. I would not have known about this place, if it wasn't for a friend of mine who raved about their sandwiches. Once you get to the address, you must go downstairs, and you will be whisked away to Italy. This place is truly amazing and magical. What makes this place amazing is their panini, and what makes their panini amazing, is the homemade bread, which is almost cracker-like. You will not find this bread anywhere else in NYC.

I had their Goloso ($5): prosciutto cotto, baked peppers and mascarpone. This panini was a dream come true. Perfection. And that bread gave it the perfect snap and crunch. Heavenly. Also, for $5, not only is this a great bang for your buck, but it is the only dish I've ever had that I actually think is underpriced. Wow. I would pay more for this pure awesomeness!

Of course, an amazing lunch would not be complete without dessert. I had a nutella pastry and lemon cookie. Both were fantabulous. I might have a had a mini-orgasm.

Gaia Italian Cafe is a truly magical place. I urge you to stop by and get whisked away to Italy. Hey, I'll even buy you lunch.
