One of the Best restaurants to open up in 2015 is called Bruno Pizza. Ironically, I just read Pete Wells' zero star review of this place. I'm happy to tell you Pete Wells is wrong. Bruno Pizza, located on 13th Street, right off of 3rd Avenue is a new restaurant. It's a very bright restaurant, maybe even too bright. Is it comfortable? Who knows. But let me tell you, it's not zero stars. Is the service amazing? I have no idea. I went twice so far, after 10:30 pm, and sat at their long counter. It wasn't crowded so I got all my food on time. We must give a new restaurant some time to work out it's kinks. To come into a restaurant when they just open and criticize it negatively is just not fair. Don't get me wrong, I am sure there are some serious kinks that the restaurant must address. I've had other foodie friends of mine gripe to me about their service and timing of getting food.
But let me tell you about my own experience. One that included taking one bite out of their Margherita pizza and almost crying. I think I did shed a tear. It was amazing. This is the only restaurant in NYC milling their own wheat. For that alone they should get a Star. The chefs here are working harder than most. The dough has a wonderful airy lightness to it. The fermented tomato sauce adds a unique tang I quite enjoyed.
Lamb Pizza comes with sauce soubise, lamb coppa, fennel, tomatillo, and charred cabbage. It's fabulous.
Mushroom Pizza comes topped with local mushrooms, béchamel, chives, and chilies. It's great. #yesplease
A pasta dish of Cavatappi with smoked bone marrow, clams, collards, and bacon was delectable.
An appetizer of Fairytale Eggplant with black cashew, shishito, and nutritional yeast, was unique, and worked well. I enjoyed it.
For dessert, end with Bruno Pizza's gelato. Rose geranium, charred blueberry compote, cashew. Another dish that is unique, pretty, well thought out, and a pleasure to consume.
Bruno Pizza may not be Del Posto, but it's a really good, if not great Pizza joint. In fact, it's one of the best in NYC. To give this restaurant zero stars is just plain wrong. It's a pizza joint for crying out loud! Go in and nestle up at their counter, and take a bite of their Margherita, you might not cry like me, but you're sure to have a magical culinary adventure in your mouth.
