NYC FOODIE OPENING OF THE WEEK: SOMTUM DER

Northern Thai fare is spicy and flavorful. And that is exactly what you will find at the just opened Somtum Der in the East Village, the sister to their Bangkok location. Celebrating Isan cuisine  (Northeastern Thai), Somtum Der just took over the space that was Lantern Thai. I stopped in today had some delectable bites.

Their H'orderves Der appetizer ($12), a selection of all their appetizers, all pork cooked different ways, was tasty as can be. I was particularly fond of the deep-fried sun-dried beef. Crunchy bites of joy.

Spicy Grilled Catfish Soup ($13) had amazing flavor and aroma. It hit the spot with a blissful kick of spice.  Deliciousness.

Spicy Papaya Salad with Grilled Pork Next ($10) packed some heat. My dining and companion both started to perspire from our brow, and you know what? It's a great dish. That pork neck, both sweet and spicy, as well as juicy. The addition of some sweet tomatoes was very nice too.

I can't wait to return to Somtum Der and try the rest of their scrumptious menu. The Heat is on. Northern Thai done right.
