NYC FOODIE BROOKLYN RESTAURANT OF THE WEEK: MASTEN LAKE

Masten Lake, a new Williamsburg, Brooklyn joint that opened up last year is a great place for wine and cheese. A meal there last month had me loving the cheese and meat plate here. Other dishes were unique and just okay.

Order any combination of the cheeses and meats offered here and you'll be a happy camper. The accompanying bread is really good too.

A dish of calamari with shaved apple had a great kick to it, and I loved the addition of apple that gave a nice crunch and sweetness. Unique.

A bone marrow dish with fennel was just okay, and I would have liked some more marrow in that bone.

A pasta dish served with chicken, reminded me and my dining companion of a chicken noodle soup, without the soup. Yet it was bland and lacked flavor. A miss.

Although I wasn't a fan of those last two dishes, I think Masten Lake is still a cool place. If you are a fan of cheese, meat, and wine, it would make a fine Brooklyn night out.
