A Portuguese brunch in NYC you say? Does it exist? Yes. Hotel Griffou in the West Village is doing a Portuguese brunch on Sundays from 1-5:30, and doing it better than well. I went last Sunday and can tell you that the food is homey and fabulous.
Start with the kitchen sink Bloody Mary, because everything pairs well with it. Then order a starter of cod fritters ($10), these little guys are almost like fish doughnuts, and they are wonderful.
Nothing like a little pork and clams ($18) for brunch. Order this Portuguese staple and you'll be happy you did. Sop up some bread in that delicious broth, and it'll feel like Lisbon.
Order another Bloody Mary, then dig into some baked eggs with chorizo ($14), it's a great brunch dish.
The last time I saw braised tripe and beans on a menu was..never. Thank God Chef David Santos includes it on his brunch menu here ($14). It's a truly wonderful dish. Tripe heaven.
Then finally, if you are looking for an orgasm at the end of your brunch, you must order the flan here. It is a memorable dessert, and I moaned and teared with joy throughout each bite. Whoa.
So for the best Portuguese brunch in NYC, head to Hotel Griffou. You will be more than satisfied, and you might even end up with a few "O"'s, I know I surely did.
