Ahhhh...Pizza. Sooo many pizza joints to choose from in the 5 boroughs of NYC! Which one is the best? Well, that is all subjective of course. Nothing beats the quintessential NYC slice at Joe's, the $4 dollar slice at South Brooklyn Pizza in the East Village is quite amazing too, the lines outside Artichoke Pizza are there for a reason. The pizza spot people have been raving about for years (since 1964) is of course, Dom DeMarco's Di Fara Pizza in Midwood, Brooklyn.
I finally made the trek to Midwood (not that much of a trek too be honest) to see what all the hype about this legendary pizza joint was about. People are known to wait for hours to get a taste of Dom's $5 slice. Luckily, my wait was closer to ten minutes, and I am happy to tell you it was true pizza perfection. It was a perfect slice. From the fresh mozzarella and fresh tomato sauce, to the sprinkle of basil and a wonderful crust. I loved it. Now, was it worth $5? Was it worth me trekking to Brooklyn? Would it be worth waiting on line for hours? Well, I have no problem paying $5 for perfection, so I am cool with that. I don't wait on line for anything, be it hamburgers, cupcakes, let alone pizza. The pizza slice itself might not be worth traveling miles for, but what is worth the trek and your time, is the entire experience. Di Fara is an insitution. It is timeless. To see Dom DeMarco behind the counter making each pie with perfect precision and execution is truly magical. For 49 years this man has been doing the same thing, turning out masterpieces, and it was an honor to be a part of. A magical slice of pizza awaits.
